Chem Squad (G5)

Please Note: This is a 4 week course offered over 4 consecutive Mondays (or Tuesday in the event of a holiday Monday) at the same time each week.

There has been a hazardous chemical spill at TELUS World of Science!

Over the course of 4 sessions, your students will be members of a Dangerous Goods Emergency Response Team investigating a chemical spill accident. Students test several èazardous substances to determine their physical and chemical properties to identify the mystery spill.

Includes kit of supplies with required chemicals and pH paperto b e sent to participants. Participants will need to gather and prep some materials for the students in advance

**Safety glasses for students strongly recommended (not included).

Coding (G4-5)

Please Note: This is a 4 week course offered over 4 consecutive Mondays (or Tuesday in the event of a holiday Monday) at the same time each week.

Over the course of 4 sessions, your students will learn the basics of coding and design and build their own game or app. We will adapt the program to suit your students skill level.

Math: Problem Solving, General Science, Technology Application

Computer with internet access required for each student or pair of students.  

If your students are working virtually (at home), each student will need:

Computer or Chromebook with internet access. iPad/tablet will not work for virtual classes, as the students will need to be able to split their screen to see both the presentation and their browser window.

 

 

Coding (G6-7)

Connecting Stars (G6)

Across four interactive sessions students will learn about the planets in our solar system, why Earth has seasons, the movements of the Sun, Moon and stars, and constellations. 

Grade 6 Topic C: Sky Science 

Please Note: Session 3 is on Tuesday, February 16th, due to Family Day.

 

Forensics Lab (G6)

Please Note: This is a 4 week course offered over 4 consecutive Mondays (or Tuesday in the event of a holiday Monday) at the same time each week.

This true-to-life forensics lab program was developed in partnership with the RCMP.

A crime has occurred and the science centre needs your help! Over the course of 4 sessions, students act as forensic scientists by analyzing fingerprints, soil samples, ink chromatography, handwriting, fibers and tire tread patterns to help reveal the prime suspect. The game is afoot!

Teachers will receive a Supply Kit, containing some supplies necessary for completion of activities. Please refer to the attached list of supplies to see what other classroom supplies will be needed. Lab activities will require some teacher prep in advance.

Topic D: Evidence & Investigation

 

Interplanetary Voyage (G9)

Please Note: This is a 4 week course offered over 4 consecutive Mondays (or Tuesday in the event of a holiday Monday) at the same time each week.

Using practical demonstrations and thought exercises, students will evaluate what is needed to conduct a space mission. Over the course of four sessions students will consider the various destinations of space missions, the technologies used in spaceflight, navigation methods, and optical instruments.

Into the Night Sky (G6-7)

Join TWOSE's astronomers for a personal tour of the universe. In this session you will get updates on what is happening in the sky tonight and noteworthy astronomy events. Students will be provided the opportunity to ask questions about all things space.

Minerals Rock (G3)

In this virtual program students will be challenged with mineral characteristics in this program that rocks!

Rocks and minerals are all around us, isn't that gneiss? Geologists identify minerals through observation and testing. Can you do the same with the minerals we found?

 

*A mineral chart and mineral cards will be emailed out to registrant, these should be printed out for each student (or groups of students, if desired)

Sensational Senses (G1)

In this virtual program, students will explore and examine their senses through activities and experiments.

Our five senses give us the ability to interpret and interact with the world around us. Students tickle each sense through a variety of experiments. They'll see closely, listen intently and sink their teeth into sensory science!

*2 Washable markers for each student are required.

Splish Splash (G2)

Get your students' feet wet in our program all about liquids.

Explore our liquid activities where students test waterproofing, absorbing, and viscosity. Race different types of liquids and see the water cycle in action!

Get up close and personal with one of our animal ambassadors. Learn about their adaptations, habitat and what they eat. Get to see an animal up close and have a live chat with one of our animal specialists.

Weather Wonders (G5)

Please Note: This is a 4 week course offered over 4 consecutive Mondays at the same time each week, except the first due to Easter Monday.

In this series of virtual programs, students will become meteorolgists!

Over the course of 4 sessions, students will learn about weather by making observations and using their own instruments! Students create a rain gauge, an anemometer, a barometer, and a wind vane and use them to observe, record, and predict the weather.

Teachers will receive a kit with ping pong balls for anemometers. Teachers will need to provide other materials.
